Beschreibung
Octavo, pp. [1-2: blank] [3-8] [1] 2-303 [304: printer's imprint], publisher's light brown cloth, front panel stamped in orange, white and black, spine panel stamped in orange, white and gold, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. A presentation copy with inscription by Harris-Burland dated July 1909 on the front free endpaper. "The theme is that of a young man of promise afflicted with hereditary insanity. Until a short time before his marriage all is well; the demon lies concealed, and he is even ignorant of its existence. Then a famous brain-specialist who had known his father divulges the dreadful secret under a sense of duty, and finding that Arthury Cyriax refuses to tell his bride of the risk she runs, the specialist informs her, too, rather piteously, on the day of the wedding. His unexpected presence at the feast disturbs the bridegroom's mental balance for the first time . John Gretton, a former lover of the young wife, who becomes Home Secretary, takes from her under peculiar and critical circumstances a promise to marry him if ever she can honourably do so . [and] succeeds in passing a Bill permitting divorce in the case of persons separated by incurable insanity. Further complications follow" (THE ACADEMY, 17 July 1909, p. 323). Partial splits in cloth along outer hinges mended, offset from endpapers on facing leaves at front and rear, a very good copy. (#171844). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 171844
