Bauer's "Hazards" is one of the most important books in the library of golf architecture, and one of the rarest. The author was deeply involved for three years in the reconstruction of the course at his home club of Ravisloe near Chicago, working with Robert White and William Watson, golf course architects. In the book, Dr. Alister Mackenzie offers the article "Hazards" excerpted from a lecture entitled "Some Common Fallacies of Golf Course Construction and Green-keeping." Edward Ray writes on "Inland Hazards", perhaps sowing the seed for his authorship of "Inland Golf" two years hence. Also included are articles "Two Famous Water Shots" (Tait and Ball played successfully out of the same water-filled bunker during the Amateur Championship at St. Andrews), "Where the British Courses Excel", "The Value of a Difficult Golf Course", "The Championship Courses", and "The Construction of New Courses." The remainder of the volume studies famous golf holes with detailed schematics of each, naming every manner of hazard. From the Old Course; Short Hole No. 8, High Hole No. 11, Elysian Fields No. 14 (fold-out drawing), and Road Hole No. 17. From Walton Heath, No. 17; Sunningdale Short Hole No. 8 (H. S. Colt); Westward Ho! No. 10 and No. 16; Prestwick No. 3; North Berwick's famous Perfection No. 14 followed by the world renown Redan No. 15; and finally, Gullane No. 15 from Course No. 1.
