A very good copy in brown cloth, lightly rubbed throughout, with moderate wear to the extremities and with a small spot at the bottom of the front panel. Issued without a jacket. The text, 31 pp., is immaculate with slight toning. The author has signed this copy on the title page of The Helmsman. Bound in and following is The Quest of the Opal--a Commentary on The Helmsman, 21 pp. The colophon to The Helmsman reads: "This is Number Two of the Poetry Booklets Series issued by The Colt Press in January, 1942, in an edition of 300 copies." This copy comes from the collection of John Williams, National Book Award winner for Augustus, as well novels such as Stoner and Butcher's Crossing. Cunningham was a highly-regarded American poet and antimodernist literary critic whose poems are full of sorrow and wit.
