Henry Peterson. Poems. First edition 1863, association copy signed by his wife, Sarah (Webb) Peterson, on the front blank and dated "Jan'y 12 th. 1864". With a mounted original hand finished photograph portrait of Henry tipped in as a frontispiece (on heavier stock and not an original sheet of the work as published). The photograph is not found in other copies of the edition.

Henry Peterson was editor of the Saturday Evening Post from 1839 to 1859. He was a well known author, editor, and abolitionist. This is his second book and first of poetry. His wife was editor of The Ladies Friend magazine for ten years.

First edition, association copy signed by Sarah Peterson, 8vo (7.25 in x 4.75 in), pp. viii, 13-203, (1). Some deliberate editorial changes: one word correction with a pencil strike through and pencil written replacement "southern" for "frightened" line 9 on p.17; pp. 51-52 deliberately cut out of the text leaving margins of the sheet only; 2 sheets, (pp. 9-12) missing or removed. Probably editorial changes in view of another printing. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott and Co, 1863. Original gilt lettered and blind decorated brown pebbled cloth with a blind arabesque and corner ornaments within double fillet borders on both sides, top edges gilt. Near fine copy as is with just a bit of wear. Unique editorial or other changes as described above. Sheets clean. H 10383 All Items Are Sent Insured.
