Beschreibung
301, 16 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 29 cm. Parallel English and Persian text. 140 objects from Nishapur coming from different collections: Iran Bastan Museum, Abgineh va Soffalineh Museum, Reza Abassi Museum, some museums abroad and private collections. The inscriptions consist mainly of aphorisms from the Prophet Muhammad and the Imam Ali, as well as proverbs from early Arab philosophers and scholars. Located on the great plateau of central Iran, Nishapur has been an important political and cultural center for centuries. The most significant period of Nishapur stretched from the ninth century to 1221, when the city was devastated by the Mongols after repeated earthquake disasters and military occupations. Much of Nishapur's history is reflected in its most enduring remains: the pottery. Before the excavations carried out by the Metropolitan Museum's Iranian Expedition (1935-1940), Nishapur was little known. Since then, Nishapur pottery and "Nishapur" pottery have found their way into numerous museums and private collections. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers soas4to716
