Contemporary half calf binding.Original marbled paper boards.New gilt spine with the original leather label.Some moderate foxing to the end papers.Four large fold out tables on thick paper.Perfectly folded.This book is the SIGNED PERSONAL COPY OF HENRY HARDINGE.A few pencil and ink annotations to pages.Hardinge operated under the orders of the Duke of Wellington.He was the Deputy Quarter-Master General for the Portuguese army during the Peninsula War.He was present at nearly all the battles.He was injured at Vimiera and Vittoria. This is presumably the copy he carried with him for reference during the Peninsula campaign.One of his notes regards the provision of blankets for the troops.Hardinge later became Govenor-General of India Secretary of War and in 1852,he succeeded Wellington as commander-in-chief of the British Army. An extremely rare work printed for the benefit of the Quarter-Master General's department of the British Army during the Peninsula War,printing previous orders and urging officers in the department to comply strictly with them.The first part of the book relates to various responsibilities of the Quarter-Master.(Provisions of Mules and Horses,Bat Money,Assignment of quarters for officers,etc.)The second part is titled "Special Instructions for the Officers of the the Quarter-Master General's Department. It again outlines the duties and responsibilities of the Quarter-Master and gives guidance on roads,camps,positions,accomadations,etc.(all shown in the folding plates.)there are also tables located within the body of the book.
