A large, very heavy tome which quickly loses its shape with use. This is an unread copy and remains, therefore, square and tight. Apart from minor shelf-creasing at the spine tips, pretty much a flawless copy. The dustjacket mirrors the minor creasing at the spine but is otherwise in excellent, clean condition - Fine and unclipped. The book has clearly been opened only for the author to sign and date - "4th October 2004" - the UK date of publication. Black-coloured boards with embossed titles at the backstrip, dark-coloured edges to the block. With ribbon-marker as called for - the ribbon-marker has never been disturbed and so has over time started to pull the block away from the backstrip at the top. The book is in Fine unread condition otherwise, however, with the most minor of pushing to the spine tips and with minor marks to the top and bottom edges of the block. In the black, paper dustjacket which is unclipped. Some shelf-rubbing evident under close examination along the edges but otherwise Fine condition. Signed by Author(s). A large, very heavy book prone to leaning and other structural wear but this is a straight, tight, unbumped copy of the black-dustjacketed version with the dark-coloured edges. Minor white-ish marks to the bottom edge from the binding glue - a common but minor production fault with this version. The block is starting to pull away from the backstrip a little but neverthless a Very Fine copy in Fine, unclipped dustjacket. SIGNED by both Susanna Clarke and illustrator Portia Rosenberg at the title page and now very difficult to find in this state. Provenance: this author-signed copy was purchased directly from the illustrator, Portia Rosenberg who, at the time of publication, established a Pop-up shop to sell double-signed copies!
