Beschreibung
Presentation copy of King Poppy, with a letter from the first Earl's widow laid in on front flyleaf, and the letter's original envelope laid in on the front pastedown. The book itself is in very good condition, with foxing to front & rear endpapers but light scattered foxing elsewhere. A blank sheet immediately before the frontespiece appears to have been removed. The outer cover is very good, some marking to the spine as illustrated but otherwise signs of handling consistent with age; top edge of text block gilded. Supplied in loose acetate protective cover. The dedication reads: To W. P. Westell with kind regards and appreciation from the widow of the author Edith Lytton June 11. 1916. This is presumably W. Percival Westell, author of My Life as a Naturalist, which was published by Cecil, Palmer and Hayward in London in 1918, to which Lord Lytton had contributed the Introduction (written years earlier prior to his death in 1891). The letter pasted into King Poppy is a thank you by Lady Lytton to Westell for a copy of My Life as a Naturalist, and reads as follows: June 20 Evening My dear Mr. Westell I was most grateful for your letter of June 15. [We] have waited to thank you for it, until I learned that your lovely book had reached me. This morning it arrived and from a rapid glance this evening I can see that it is perfect - for every season of the year - then the sea treasures described - and the stars - of the names of which I always long to be reminded - are so well mapped out. I therefore look forward to many quiet readings and imaginary rambles, for alas I can't walk so far as I used to do. I am also very pleased by the kind inscription & personal touch marked by my Christian name introduced. So pray accept my sincere thanks and believe how much I shall appreciate your thoughts and descriptions in this fascinating volume. I need hardly say that Conny & Nurse had the first look through the book, & they were much excited. Believe me ever sincerely yrs Edith Lytton Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng.
