First impression of the true first edition with 'first printing' stated on the publisher's prelims copyright page as called for. *** SIGNED, INSCRIBED and DATED by the author on the recto of the second free endpaper: 'With Love from Rod McKuen Xmas '68' in black fountain pen. ***Author's photograph by Frank Sinatra on back panel of dustwrapper. ***Near fine in brick-red boards with satin pink titles to black cloth-covered spine. Blind embossed monogram 'R M' design to front board. Red front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Top edge of text-block stained dark red, as called for. Very small, unobtrusive contemporaneous bookseller's label, printed: Deseret Book Co. Orange, Calif. Corners of boards slightly bumped. Bottom edge of rear board bumped. No inscriptions. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of $3.95. 4cm closed tear to bottom corner of front panel of dustwrapper. 3cm closed tear to bottom of spine of dustwrapper. 2cm closed tear to top edge of front panel of dustwrapper. Spine and front and rear panels of dustwrapper bright. ***111 pages plus one-page note about the author to the rear. 224mm x 144 mm. ***'Rod McKuen was born in Oakland, California, in 1933, and grew up in California and Nevada, Washington and Oregon. He has worked as a laborer, movie star, stunt man, radio disk jockey, newspaper columnist, and as a psychological war-fare script writer during the Korean War, before becoming bestselling author, composer, and entertainer. ***Mr. McKuen now divides his time between the United States and Europe, where he performs in the major concert halls and night clubs and continues to write songs and poems. He has recently completed two motion picture scores, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Joanna, and has recorded more than thirty-five record albums of his own songs. His more than nine hundred compositions performed by other artists have sold a total of 50 million records. ***With the publication of Stanyan Street and Other sorrows in 1966 and Listen to the Warm a Year later, Mr McKuen became the best-selling poet in America.
