INSCRIBED BY WILLIAM GOWERS TO THOMAS BARLOW: "Dr. Barlow/ with kind regards" (see photo; the inscription is on the verso of the front flyleaf and is in pencil). Barlow was probably Thomas Barlow, for whom see Garrison-Morton 3720, Barlow's 1883 paper on "Barlow's disease": "Classic description of infantile scurvy (Barlow s disease), which includes the pathology of the condition." In 1870 Barlow had succeeded Gowers as assistant physician to William Jenner at University College Hospital. ABOUT GOWERS'S BOOK: Garrison-Morton 4568. "To Gowers we owe the earliest and in many cases the original descriptions of many disorders. . . .
