Beschreibung
Foreword by David C. Mearns. Small 4to. Light grey cloth with black spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 519pp. Pictorial endpapers. Very good/very good. Jacket a tad rubbed and faintly edgeworn, with chips at head of spine. Tight, handsome first edition of this superb anthology of writings about Lincoln by a "Who's Who" of 76 noted Lincoln scholars, each of whose facsimile signature follows their entry. This copy bears tipped neatly to inner flyleaves fine Typed Letters Signed from three contributors, all addressed to noted Lincoln scholar (and fellow contributor) Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). First is from Margaret A. Flint (1909-82), long-time Assistant State Historian. 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Springfield, IL, 10 March 1965. On "Illinois State Historical Library" letterhead, Flint chats about Civil War centennial and Civil War Round Table matters. Second is from Mort R. Lewis (1897-1991), noted film, radio and television script writer. 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Los Angeles, CA, 8 October 1960. Detailed commentary on various Civil War Round Table issues. And third is from R. Gerald McMurtry (1906-88), American historian, director of the Louis A. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum (1956-73) and author of more than 200 articles, pamphlets and books about Lincoln. 1p, 8½" X 11", Fort Wayne, IN, 22 April 1960. On "The Lincoln National Life Foundation" letterhead, he discusses a Civil War editorial cartooning contest and asks Gates to vote. A nice copy with choice autograph additions.
