Beschreibung
First Edition (SD). Flat-signed by the author, John P. Frank, on the second front end paper. Five years after this book was published, the former clerk to Justice Hugo Black, John P. Frank, argued and won the Miranda case in an appeal to the Supreme Court, a 5-4 decision written by Chief Justice Earl Warren. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are very clean. The black lettering on the front and spine is nicely bright. There is some crinkling at the spine ends. The cover edges and corners are in excellent condition. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are brown. They are perfectly clean and in excellent condition. That description fits all of the pages in the book. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of Mr. Frank's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Mr. Frank writes in the Preface: 'I have followed the view that the readers interested in Lincoln are special kind of audience whose enthusiasm for the subject is such that they are willing to master technical material, if they must, to comprehend Lincoln. I have believed that an audience which is willing to study the technical phases of Civil War finance or the intricacies of the troop movements at Vicksburg will also be willing to try to understand the problems presented to Lincoln in preparing his argument in the United States Supreme Court on the Lewis case or the difficulties underlying the thrust and parry of his cross-examinations. And so, while I have done my best to clarify and to simplify, I have not excluded any matter whatsoever from this volume on the ground that it is too technical to be understood. The reward for walking through the thorns of the law, I submit, is very great. I believe that no one can truly understand Lincoln as the public figure, perhaps 20 per cent of his life, without understanding the other 80 per cent of his life. To me there is no grander sight, no greater hope for humankind, than the vision of Lincoln growing from the thoughtless young legislator of the internal-improvement days in the 1830s to the wisest American of the second inaugural. That growth is infinitely the more comprehensible if seen against the pattern of this parallel growth from the stumbling excesses of the early Anderson case to the superb craftsmanship of the Rock Island bridge matter.'.
