Rushdie (though lifted, he still lived under the threat of the fatwa) was in Houston on September 10, 2001 to speak at the University of Houston's annual writer's series. Checkoway was the director of creative writing at the university and was Rushdie's host. After the 9/11 attacks Rushdie was "trapped" in Houston for a week, unable to safely return home.The inscription, obviously before the tragic events took place, is warm, happy, heartfelt and ironic: "To Salman, with gratitude and warmth.
