Translated and Edited from the Original French by Mrs. [Nancy] Arthur Bell. Introduction by Major-General Maurice. First edition, with this copy being extra-illustrated with over 40 additional plates. This set has also been beautifully bound in a signed binding by Popelin, signed with the binder's ticket at foot of inside front board. Lacking the publishers adverts to rear of Vol II. Minor wear to hinges and edges, spines of both volumes every-so-slightly age darkened. Internally pristine. An elegant binding appropriately encloses these memoirs of the Napoleonic era written by one of Napoleon's most trusted aides, the Baron Lejeune (1775-1848), artist-soldier-engineer. Louis-Francois Lejeune's "pictures in words" are enhanced by the addition of over 40 plates, including battle scenes, and portraits of the imperial family, important generals and other eminent personnages. His name is engraved on the Arc de Triomphe. He was the aide-de-camp to Marshal Berthier from 1800-1912, and participated into all of Napoleonic campaigns. In terms of his artistic endeavors, he painted an important series on the battles that he experienced, one of which is displayed at Versailles. Contents include recollections of many military events, such as 'Austerlitz and Jena', 'The Taking of Vienna', and 'The Arrival of the Emperor at Paris'. full dark green crushed levant morocco, imperial crest gilt on front and back covers, paneled spines, richly gilt dentelles, top edge gilt.
