"Man on the Ocean", by R.M. Ballantyne. First Edition, First Issue 1863, published by Nelson, London. Inscribed and dated (1862) by Ballantyne to the original yellow front free end paper which is now bound before the frontispiece. Late 19th century half-leather, marbled boards, colour frontispiece, title page, 408 printed pages, illustrations to text and 7 full-page colour illustrations, all checked and complete. Quayle 30a. Quayle notes that the book was released on the 11th of December 1862, so the book must have been inscribed close to the release date. The book is rare enough as a 1st Issue, but signed Ballantyne books are extremely rare and there is only one on abe at the moment. Book Condition: Quite faded to the spine, rubbed to the board edges, the pages are foxed and browned and have some soiling (mostly finger soiling), there is an ink splash to page 262 (shown in the 11th photo), an inscription to the bottom of page 17 and only one of the plates still has its tissue-guard.
