First Edition (Appleton-Century-Cross= '(1)' on the last page). This book is signed and inscribed on the first front end paper: 'For Judge _______ , from Richard Lee Marks, January 15, 1954.' Included with the book is a separate signed note, in a small envelope, from the author to the Judge. You can see the blue covers of the book in the photos. They are very clean. The lettering on the front and spine is nicely bright. There's just a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends. The edges and corners (no rubbing) are in very solid shape. There are small bump/creases just above the two bottom corners, a tiny one just below the rear top corner, and one just off the front covers bottom edge, adjacent to the spine. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through them without finding any instances of soiling. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. The condition of the pages is very good as well. There are no placeholder creases, no top corner creases. The small bump above the bottom corner of the rear cover created a very small crease just off the tip of the bottom corners of a good number of the latter pages. It is, of course, far from the print. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It has a 2 inch tear coming up from the front bottom edge. There is one tiny tear off the top edge of the rear cover, another tiny one just off the bottom edge of the front cover, and a little wear at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There's also a tiny scuff at the front bottom corner The jacket is quite clean. The flaps are in very good shape, also very clean. There is a small crease just off the rear flap's bottom corner and a tiny one at the rear flap's top corner. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the author's obituary: 'Richard Lee Marks was a theatrical producer and a Pulitzer Prize nominated author of the historical novel, 'Cortés: The Great Adventurer and the Fate of Aztec Mexico.' He received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University and master's degree from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as an officer in the Pacific during WWII, and returned home in 1946 to marry. Together he and his wife traveled extensively throughout South America; living in Argentina, Peru, Spain and Mexico where Marks researched and wrote his first two novels 'The March of the Hero' and 'The Pendulum'. Back in New York, Marks embarked on a career in education as co-owner and Headmaster of Mohawk Country Home School in White Plains, NY. Active in New York Theater for many years, he produced plays by Tennessee Williams, Harold Pinter and Mark Medoff, among others. After moving to Topeka, Kansas in 1985 he resumed his writing career with a work of non-fiction, 'Three Men of the Beagle' followed in 1994 by the aforementioned critically acclaimed, Pulitzer prize nominated historical novel, 'Cortes: The Great Adventurer and the Fate of Aztec Mexico.'.
