The book deals with 'the mode of invasion of the epidemic and its treatment, an account of the sanitary arrangements adopted at Oxford, and suggestions for the future. Acland was fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, physician to the Radcliffe Infirmary, Radcliffe librarian, and Dr. Lee's reader in anatomy at the University. Acland assumed a leading role as consulting physician and did much to control the outbreak at its height. In the 1854 epidemic he concluded that cholera had spread as a result of sewage which at this time was still regularly pumped into the Cherwell and Isis rivers. Aclands's studies (and this book) later led to much improvement of water supply and sanitation in Oxford and the surrounding area. In 1857, he was appointed Oxford's nineteenth Regius Professor of Medicine, "and in many ways was the most distinguished in the list" (Osler). This copy is inscribed to: "Miss Hughes, who took charge of the Field of Observation, from her faithful friend and servant the Author." It is thought the presentee was the Anglican nun Mother Marian Rebecca Hughes (1817-1912) who in 1841, was reputedly the first woman to take religious vows in theChurch of England since the Reformation. Author's presentation inscription on half-title, bookplate of the physician and book collector Bent Einer Juel-Jensen (with his 1963 dated signature on recto of free endpaper and a loosely inserted page of notes in his hand).
