A collection of "occasional pieces" (both anecdotal reminiscences and short stories) by the author, all deriving from his experiences during World War II; the book is described by him as "a series of loosely related, uncomprehensive, unheroic items about what we were like then and the sort of things that happened to us and around us." The author was a Scottish-born film and drama critic, who during the war took part in a famous deception involving a double for General Bernard Montgomery ("Monty") in the run-up to D-Day. (The jacket blurb suggests that his account of this episode -- included in this volume under the title "I Was Monty's Double Once Removed" -- was the basis for the 1958 British film I WAS MONTY'S DOUBLE, but in fact he is credited only as a technical advisor on the film, its official source being the book of that name by M.E.
