Beschreibung
12mo, 155pp. About very good in the publisher's blue cloth. Large, but faint dampstain to both boards towards the fore-edge, but no internal evidence of water damage. Contents clean. This copy SIGNED by the author on the front free endpaper. Cheng, whose name is sometimes written as Cheng Tien-hsi, was a Chinese writer and jurist, who was also the last ambassador of the Republic of China to the United Kingdom. On the same leaf where the book is signed is a gift inscription which reads as follows: "Dec. 1954. Compliments of the Season to Agnes and George with fond regards. Stubby Mahon." Below that is an owner's blindstamp belonging to George H. Greene. Greene and Mahon were both westerners living in China, and they were likely involved in either Christian missionary activity, or diplomacy or business. An attractive volume, scarce signed, which connects this Chinese writer to the Western influences in his country, with whom he maintained a lifelong connection (he died in London).
