These man were combined into the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, CSA in April 1862. He stayed in Company E, 7th Tennessee until he was paroled May 11, 1865, at Gainesville, Alabama. The 7th Tennessee fought in Mississippi, moved with Forrest to West Tennessee and Kentucky, then saw action in East Tennessee. Later the regiment participated in the Battles of Franklin and Nashville, and in 1865 skirmished in Alabama. It had 210 present for duty in October, 1863, but very few surrendered at Gainesville, Alabama, in May, 1865. DORN II 989; COULTER 247: "These personal reminiscences of a private soldier in General Forrest's cavalry, written almost half a century after the war, were evidently enjoyed by Southerners (principally Tennesseans) of the early twentieth century, for they passed through three editions. The book is based on memory fifty years after the events and has little value beyond inferences from the many personal experiences recorded." NEVINS I pg. 108: "The author's service as a member of Forrest's cavalry gives this work great appeal in spite of the fact that it was written half century after the war and without refreshing material."
