Stated First Edition. Limited Edition. 'The first edition of this book consists of 490 numbered copies. This is copy 446.' A very large number of interesting photographs, along with some illustrations. This is one of a number of books that were owned by and inscribed to George Plimpton that I'm listing. If you're not familiar with him, take a look at his Wikipedia profile, or better yet google 'In His League: Being George Plimpton' a really interesting article published in The Nation. Suffice it to say he lived a fascinating life. The authors, J. Michael Lennon and Donna Pedro Lennon, inscribed the book to him on the half-title page. The inscription reads '14 June 2000, To George, Editor of editors, with thanks for showing us the way, Warmly, Mike & Donna.' Note that Plimpton was the First editor-in-chief of the Paris Review. Plimpton and Mailer knew each other pretty well. Plimpton interviewed him for the Paris Review in 1998. They were also together in Zaire for the Ali-Foreman fight ( I have a book listed for sale about that fight titled Muhammad Ali: In Fighter's Heaven which is signed by its author Victor Bockris. That book was also owned by Plimpton). 'J. Michael Lennon is an American academic and writer who is the Emeritus Professor of English at Wilkes University and the late Norman Mailer?s archivist and authorized biographer. He published Mailer's official biography Norman Mailer: A Double Life in 2013. He edited Mailer's selected letters in 2014 and the Library of America's two-volume set Norman Mailer: The Sixties in 2018. 'At Lennon's suggestion, in 1994 the Mailer papers, previously housed in Manhattan, were moved to a large professional storage facility in Pennsylvania. This arrangement made it more convenient for Lennon to have access. Lennon and his wife began to re-organize the papers, sifting and sorting through 500 cubic feet of paper. This led to work on a comprehensive annotated listing of Mailer's writings, and those about him. Norman Mailer: Works and Days, compiled by the Lennons, was published in 2000, with a preface from Mailer, and is the standard Mailer bibliography.' In this case, I can leave the Condition description for last because there really aren't any issues that need to be called out. You can see the covers in the photos. They are quite clean. There is little to no wear, a little crinkling at the spine ends. The edges and corners are all in excellent condition. The gilt lettering on the front and spine is very bright. The page edges are also quite clean. And the book is square, not slanted, and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages. These pages are also exceptionally clean. I didn't see any soiling on any of the pages. Nor are there creases or dogeared corners. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Note that this book was definitely issued without a dust jacket. Note also that, despite its excellent condition, I am offering this book at a very significant discount to the few other signed copies that are for sale. Those range from $250.00 to $325.00. The ones that were also signed by Norman Mailer range from $750.00 to $900.00. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 002186
