SIGNED BY STEPHEN JAY GOULD: "For Jim/ with best/ wishes & hopes for/ massive progenesis/ among the little fishes/ Steve Gould." What is "Progenesis"? Here is what Gould writes in his book: "Progenesis Paedomorphosis (retention of formerly juvenile characteristics by adult descendants) produced by precocious sexual maturation of an organism still in a morphologically juvenile stage" (p. 485). NOTE: This inscription is interesting for two reasons. (1) It is signed "Steve Gould". Steve usually signed his books "Stephen Jay Gould", because they were signed for people he did not know. He was "Steve" to those whom he did know. (2) This inscription has meaningful content in terms of the ideas discussed by Gould in his book. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 15952
