Sarah Bernhardt y pose en tenue de grande élégante parisienne s'admirant dans un miroir à main. Un grand émoi s'était emparé de Sydney en juin 1891, Sarah Bernhardt alllait arriver ! Et pourtant la tournée faillit être fortement compremise, la grande actrice, en provenance de San Francisco, voyageait avec ses deux chiens Chouette et Star. Mais la loi australienne, destinée à lutter contre la rage, prévoyait une période de quarantaine de six mois pour la grande Sarah et ses insérapables compagnons. Elle ira les visiter sur l'île où ils étaient confinés, et fera même l'acquisition d'un Saint Bernard et d'un koala en Australie. Envoi autographe signé et daté de Sarah Bernhardt : "A mon jeune et charmant élève Georges Leroy, toute ma sympathie. Sarah Bernhardt 1908." 356ème sociétaire de la Comédie Française, Georges Le Roy fut, au Conservatoire, l'élève de Mounet-Sully mais aussi de Sarah Bernhardt. Il en sortit avec le premier prix de comédie en 1907 et se produisit ensuite au théâtre Sarah Bernhardt. L'année suivante, elle lui offre sans doute ce portrait dédicacé à l'occasion de son entrée à la Comédie Française. Professeur au Conservatoire, Leroy formera toute une génération de talentueux comédiens dont Gérard Philippe. And yet the tour was almost severely curtailed, as the great actress was traveling from San Francisco with her two dogs, Chouette and Star. But Australian law, designed to combat rabies, stipulated a six-month quarantine period her inseparable companions.
