Beschreibung:

Nathan, Robert. PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. New York: Knopf, 1940. FIRST EDITION. An exceedingly FINE copy (virtually no wear to the fragile woven cloth) in a fresh NEAR FINE priced dust jacket which has a tiny bit of chipping to the spine tip and very minor wear to the edges but retains the FULL RED COLOR of the lettering on both the spine panel and front panel, rare thus and offering exceptional eye appeal given most examples seem to fade to pink just by staring at them. This is a PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author on the half-title: "For _____/Robert Nathan" PORTRAIT OF JENNIE tells the story of a struggling depression-era painter whose muse is a young girl from the past, a girl who grows into womanhood at a rate in defiance of all laws of time and space each time he encounters her. The 1949 film of the novel, starring Joseph Cotton & Jennifer Jones with equally touching performances, has been lauded as both magical and unforgettable by those who love the movie. Certainly one of the most unusual and satisfying romantic fantasies ever to enchant popular culture and be successfully adapted to film. To quote the book's main character Jennie Appleton: *There is no life, my darling, until you love and have been loved. And then there is no death.* A masterpiece of its genre and the basis for a timeless classic film. In a custom white linen folding box with black & gold leather labels.
