This signed, first edition presentation copy is inscribed in Lewis' hand: "A. C. Harwood / ex dono auctoris / June 1939.", which means a gift from the author. PROVENANCE: This manuscript was part of the A. Cecil Harwood collection, acquired by Shelley and Son Books from the Laurence Harwood Estate after his passing in 2020. Laurence Harwood was A. Cecil Harwood's son -- and C. S. Lewis' godson.C. S. Lewis met A. Cecil Harwood and Owen Barfield at Oxford in 1919 and they became friends for life. In 1925 Harwood married Honourable Daphne Olivier (cousin of actor Lawrence Olivier) who was a devout follower of Rudolf Steiner, founder of Anthroposophy. Harwood and Barfield were introduced to the Anthroposophical Society through Daphne. In the early years of the Lewis - Harwood friendship poetry was the strong bond between them. Harwood read Dymer as Lewis was writing it and he was very encouraging. From the late twenties until WWII, Lewis, Harwood, Barfield and often one or two others went on annual walking tours around England. Lewis called Harwood, "Lord of the Walks". Cecil Harwood had a son named Laurence (b.1933) for whom Lewis was godfather. Most scholars do not consider Harwood an Inkling but after Anthony Hopkins was named for the role of Lewis in an upcoming production of Shadowlands, Laurence Harwood wrote to Hopkins and in that letter the son refers to his father as an Inkling.AUTHENTICATION: Accompanying this copy is a four-page detailed analysis by Dr. Charlie W. Starr, world-leading expert in C. S. Lewis' handwriting by several of the world's top C. S. Lewis scholars including Michael Ward and Devin Brown. Within this certificate of analysis, Dr. Starr notes that, among many specific examples of handwriting characteristics known Lewis, he is "confident that this book is the Harwoods' copy of this first edition of 'The Personal Heresy', inscribed with Cecil Harwood's name by Lewis himself."DESCRIPTION: Green cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine. 150 pp. Dust wrapper is light green with dark green text.
