This photograph was taken at the White House on February 23, 1979 during the luncheon for the Living Legacy Awards of the National Caucus on the Black Aged. Photograph in color, measures 8" x 10". White House photography stamp on verso, C9548-06. Photograph taken by White House photographer Bill Fitz-Patrick. Photograph is inscribed: "Best wishes to Dorothy Maynor, Jimmy Carter." Also in this photograph on the far left is educator and civil rights activist, Septima Poinsette Clark. Dorothy Maynor (1910-1996) was an American soprano, concert singer and founder of the Harlem School of the Arts. She was asked by President Harry S. Truman to perform at his inauguration in 1949, becoming the first African American to perform at a presidential inauguration. In 1995, she was invited to serve on the board of the Metropolitan Opera, becoming the first African American to receive this honor. She died in 1996. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 11212
