Series of outdoor "mask portrait" photos executed by Meatyard in Lexington, KY in the early 1970s. According to friend Guy Davenport, Meatyard was an optical lens grinder by trade who shot photos throughout year, stored the rolls, then booked dark room facilities and developed once per annum. For the Lucybelle Series, Meatyard kept masks in the trunk of his car and enlisted friends and family as occasions permitted. Meatyard was affiliated with the circulating association of writers, photographers and artists of the Lexington Parnassus of the 1960s-70s, many of whom donned a masks for the Lucybelle Series: Wendell Berry, Jonathan Greene, Robert C. May, Guy Davenport, Guy Mendes, Jonathan Williams. This 2002 edition is 128 pages, expanded from 84 pages of the 1974 edition. Editor James Rheims has republished the originalphotographs, but added two essays, notes, and an appendix identifying the people behind the masks. Ships fast with tracking.
