First edition of these three addresses to young physicians delivered between 1842 and 1853: On the Duties of Young Physicians, On the Prospects of Young Physicians, On the Modern Advancement of Physic. Sir James Y Simpson was a noted obstetrician, but is chiefly known for the promotion of the use of chloroform as an anaesthetic. He became President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1850. This is a presentation copy inexplicably dated 1848 on half-title page.: 'To Mrs Ward with kindest remembrances JYS Edinburgh Nov 1848'. In original boards with spine renewed and original spine laid down. Loss to top corner. Inside, small loss and tear to fore edge of free end paper. Long tear to lower half of front free end paper and half-title page. There are two library stamps and accession no. on the title page of Boston College High School Domestic Library. See scans.
