Personal letter from author written in blue fountain pen on half title page that was cut out and subsequently laid back in. Letter reads, "Spencer Prankard, [suffix illegible], Larchmont, N.Y., Dear [salutation name illegible]: I am delighted to hear that you are going to have this copy of my book, and I hope that you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Yours, Arthur D. Howden Smith, Feb. 2, 1937." Eight wonderful full color art plates including frontispiece, reproduced from paintings that Murphy was commissioned to paint for this book. Hardcover book in fair condition with coarse blue pebbled cloth boards and embossed orange lettering on front board and spine; cloth shows substantial wear and toning to all edges; all corners bumped and scuffed or frayed; spine panel shows the most damage with 1/8" of cloth spine missing at head above the title; 1" closed tear to cloth at lower right edge of spine panel; spine heavily sunned; both boards sunned and tan lines present on front board; spine panel is fragile along both edges; a map of The Spanish Main is printed across both paste downs and end papers; there is no skull and crossbones on the front board, found on later printings; all page edges heavily toned.
