SIGNED BY PAUL DIRAC "P. A. M. Dirac", on the title page. "The first complete exposition of the general formalism of quantum mechanics, presented in a logically consistent and axiomatic fashion, based on the notions of 'observables' and 'states' as primitives, was Dirac's Principles of Quantum Mechanics. The impact of the book on the generation of modern physicists is perhaps best characterized by a remark made by Lennard-Jones when the book appeared: 'An eminent European physicist, who is fortunate enough to possess a bound set of reprints of Dr. Dirac's original papers, has been heard to refer to them affectionately as his 'Bible'. Those not so fortunate have now at any rate an opportunity of acquiring a copy of the authorized version' " (Jammer, Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, pp. 366-67). "The latest and most successful creation of theoretical physics, namely Quantum Mechanics, is fundamentally different in its principles from the two programmes which we will briefly call Newton's and Maxwell's. For the quantities that appear in its laws make no claim to describe Physical Reality itself, but only the probabilities for the appearance of a particular physical reality on which our attention is fixed. Dirac, to whom, in my opinion, we owe the most logically perfect presentation of this theory. . . " (Albert Einstein, "Maxwell's Influence on the Development of the Conception of Physical Reality", in James Clerk Maxwell, a Commemoration Volume, 1931, pp. 72-73). "Dirac was one of the greatest theoretical physicists in the twentieth century. He is best known for his important and elegant contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics. . . . Present expositions of quantum mechanics largely rely on his masterpiece The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930)" (D.S.B. 17: 224). Paul Dirac shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933 with Erwin Schrödinger "for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory." The International Series of Monographs on Physics.
