Presentation copy, inscribed to W. V. Quine. 228, [1] pp, 1 leaf (ads); figs. Original cloth. Very Good, in very good dust jacket. Quine has made pencil notes on pp. 82-3, 105, 107, 110, 113, 116 ('shameless'; ouch). Quine is indexed on pp. 71, 74, 190-3. Quine reviewed Ushenko's Theory of Logic for Philosophical Review (Jan. 1938, 47(1):94), and the two had another exchange in the Journal of Philosophy in 1942 --Ushenko wrote 'Dr. Quine's Theory of Truth-Functions' (Jan. 25, 1942), 39(3):64-67), and Quine fashioned his 'Reply to Professor Ushenko' (68-71). 'Ushenko's Problems of Logic had attracted favorable attention and led to his being asked to contribute to the Schilpp volume for Bertrand Russell. Moreover, his 1946 metaphysics book entitled Power and Events was esteemed as a contribution to neo-Whiteheadian process philosophy. . All in all, Ushenko was regarded in the philosophy community as a significant minor figure. He was, however, not viewed with much favor by his colleagues at Princeton. He was a non-charismatic low-keyed lecturer and his undergraduate teaching found little favorable resonance. . He died prematurely (of cancer?) in 1956. The fact remains that during his brief time at Princeton [Ushenko] was, apart from Stace, the Department's most insightful and productive senior philosopher' (Nicholas Rescher, Autobiography, Collected Papers Supplementary Volume, 2007, p. 62).
