Between 1962 and 1964 the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in the University of London ran a graduate seminar devoted to smaller territories and their problems. In this volume a selection of the papers which were considered by this seminar are published. Some of the smaller territories examined by the seminar have emerged as independent countries, while Zanzibar has been merged with a larger neighboring independent country. There are, however, many still dependent small territories within the Commonwealth. This volume throws some light on the political, economic, sociological and demographic problems of smallness, in both independent countries and dependent territories.
