Signed and inscribed by Irving Fisher to John I. Zoller atop front free endpaper. "This book is the outgrowth of my testimony at the Hearings of the Sub-committee of the Committee of the Judiciary of the United States Senate in April, 1926. It embodies the notes which I have been collecting on the alcohol problem for full twenty years - during which time I have radically changed my attitude toward Prohibition. It also endeavors to cover all the important data, on both sides of the controversy, which were presented at the Senate hearings." - Preface. "When starting for Colorado in 1899 to repair my health I was warned not to let the Colorado doctors give me whiskey; for at that time alcohol was still regarded by many physicians as a valuable medicine for numerous diseases. While recovering my health I soon learned that alcohol is a physiological poison, and out of place in the human body. I then realized that the use of alcoholics was economically costly and wasteful to the nation, and in more ways than one." -pages 1-2. "The outstanding value of the book is the criticism of the statistics given by Mr. Shirk, research director of the Moderation League." - M.P. Ravenel. Mr. Zoller of Little Falls, NY was active in the Universalist Church and served on several corporate boards. p. [xii], 255. Graphs. Reading List. Index. Binding intact. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This non-fiction book examines the enduring impact of Prohibition in the US. The author takes a balanced approach, weighing claims by prohibitionists against countervailing arguments. The author begins by noting how the push to prohibit alcohol gained steam in the early 20th century, culminating in the ratification of the 18th Amendment in 1919. Chapter by chapter, the text investigates various claims regarding Prohibition's effects on drunkenness, poverty, crime, employment, corruption and other areas, drawing on data from the period. It challenges the notion that Prohibition improved these elements of society. The book also examines the role of Canada's experience with Prohibition as a parallel case study. Considering the arguments of both supporters and opponents of Prohibition, this book aims to help readers understand the complex history of the era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9780332477084_0
