Beschreibung
Octavo, 373pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the publisher's pale blue/gray cloth, decorated in gilt. Inner hinges just starting, and the front gutter exposed at the frontispiece, else a sound, fresh example. Presentation copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Antin on the day of publication (per a pencilled note) on the half-title page: "To Mrs. Albert H. Pratt, in memory of the inspiring occasion of our first meeting, and in the hope of many more. Mary Antin." Tipped in before the title page is a [4]pp. pamphlet, essentially a program of events hosted by Israel Antin (the author's father) and his family. It begins: "On the Eighth of May, 1914, we are going to hold a family reunion, to celebrate the Twentieth Anniversary of our landing in Boston. The story of these twenty years has a meaning too big to be hidden in the family circle, so we are asking a few of our friends and neighbors to consider with us, on our anniversary, what twenty years of America may bring to a group of thoughtful citizens." The program is addressed in ink to Mr. Pratt, and SIGNED by Mary Antin (by her married name, Mary Antin Grabau). The order of exercises follows, then the lyrics to "America." Attractive near-contemporary bookplate of Franklin S. Teny on the front paste-down. Antin was a Jewish immigrant to Boston, born in Poland. Her memoir of immigration and assimilation is a classic of immigrant literature, and of Judaica. While other titles of hers can be found in commerce signed, this effusive presentation copy of "The Promised Land" is distinctly scarcer, and includes a wonderful document of Antin's own family history in America. A superlative copy. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 10997
