Provenance et sobre et élégante reliure signée de Fontenay-le-Comte Édition originale de ces mémoires apocryphes qui font suite aux Mémoires d'une femme de qualité sur Louis XVIII, sa cour et son règne (1829), aux Mémoires d'une femme de qualité depuis la mort de Louis XVIII jusqu'à la fin de 1829 (1830) et enfin aux Mémoires et souvenirs d'une femme de qualité sur le consulat et l'empire (1830). Les présents volumes portent sur la Monarchie de Juillet.Profitant d'une mode des témoignages historiques « au féminin », Étienne-Léon de Lamothe-Langon compose le manuscrit de ces mémoires d'une femme de la haute noblesse, élève de Madame de Staël, qui évolue tour à tour à la cour de Bonaparte puis à celle de Louis XVIII. Mais le texte ne satisfait pas les éditeurs, qui en demandant une révision par Amédée Pichet. Ce-dernier ajoute quelques épisodes aux volumes portant sur le règne de Louis XVIII, suivi en cela par Charles Nodier. Hinard, Gaimaut et Ferrier apportent les dernières corrections. Le Baron de Lamothe-Langon était coutumier de ce genre d'impostures : Philippe Audebrand raconte : « C'était, sur la fin du règne de Louis Philippe, un vieillard de haute taille, un peu voûté, un peu fané, visiblement surmené par l'excès du travail et l'abus de l'opium, qu'il prenait en globules. [.] Cet improvisateur était une espèce de Protée, se produisant en librairie sous toutes les formes humaines et sous tous les déguisements. Un jour, il signait le livre nouveau de son nom. Une autre fois, l'oeuvre était d'un Ancien Diplomate ou d'une Duchesse. Parfois, c'était un pseudonyme de fantaisie.
