First Edition (SD). Two facts make this book singularly unique: once listed it will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet, and it will be the only one with a dust jacket. The signed inscription is on the first front end paper. It reads: 'For Bert and Hilda, With my best wishes--Esther Menaker, Feb. 1983.' You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are in excellent condition, exceptionally clean and with only very minimal wear. The green lettering on the spine is very bright. The cover edges look very good. There isn't any rubbing at the corners. The top edge of the spine has just a little crinkle. There is a crease just above the front bottom corner and just below the rear top corner. Neither crease has any impact on the pages. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The white inside covers and endpapers are perfectly clean. That appears to be the case for all of the pages. I'm scrolling through them without finding any instances of soiling. There doesn't appear to be any creasing either. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And the signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I don't see any soiling. There is toning off the top edges of both the front and rear cover and very clearly on the spine. There is a small loss at the top edge of the spine, and a smaller one at the bottom edge of the spine. Neither touches upon any of the print. The flaps are in very good shape, only a slight bit of toning off the top edges, no soiling. There is a light penciled line over the last line of the short bio of Dr. Menaker on the rear flap, a line that identifies the doctor as the editor of a collection of papers by Leila Lerner. I'm wondering if that was a factual error, Leila Lerner did edit Dr. Menaker's book Masochism and the Emergent Ego. Finishing up on condition: the jacket is not priced or clipped. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'Otto Rank: A Rediscovered Legacy is a reintroduction to the life and theories of this forerunner of ego psychology. Here is a portrait of the thinker who struggled to understand the individual's fear of mortality and the universal human longing for something constant in which to believe. Esther Menaker, a practicing psychoanalyst in her own right, delves into the character and thinking of this believer in humanity's innate creativity and potential for psychological growth. However, as Menaker explains, although Rank saw that psychology and psychoanalysis could expand our insights into an understanding of human personality, he also understood that it could not provide a central core of meaning and purpose. Her book re-creates the spirit of a person who believes strongly in the freedom of the will and the individual potential and responsibility for change in the human personality. This sensitive review of Rank's thought and major theoretical observations will be of interest to the reader personally concerned with such thinking. Otto Rank will interest as well therapists who will find him relevant to modern clinical psychology.' 'Esther Menaker was born in Bern, Switzerland in 1907. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was three. In 1930 she traveled to Austria to study at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Institute (where she received her doctorate) and completed two years of psychoanalysis with Anna Freud. Dr. Menaker joined the faculty at Columbia University and also worked as a child analyst. In conjunction with her own theories related to ego psychology, she helped to revive the work Otto Rank. She would go on to publish a number of articles and books that dealt with Rank's contributions to the field.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 004220
