Private Press. First Edition. Very good original maroon hardback with decorative boards and dark brown endpapers. Signed by the author to the frontis with dedication "To Admiral Allington with the compliments of The Author Nov. 1896". This book is very smart and clean, vi 138 pages including index. 10 full page black & white plates, plus 2 double page maps, and numerous engraved embellishments in the text. The Preface begins "The following reminiscences have been compiled from a Journal kept by me while serving in the Baltic Fleet, supplemented by recollections which had not and never can fade from my memory ---". The book is printed 40 years after the event and the author states "After the lapse of 40 years I am able to write of these matters, as well as to mention shipmates by name, in a way impossible for the first decade or two following the events described ---". The author sums up his preface with "This book is only for my family and friends to whom I feel it will be acceptable --". It has 14 Chapter headings and an Appendix. To give you an idea of the content the headings are Volunteering, Portsmouth, Join the Fleet, Life on the "Duke" (Duke of Wellington) , Routine of a War Ship, Shipmates, Rendezvous at Kiel, Revl and Nargen, Croustadt, Internal Machines, Preparations against Sweaborg, Bombardment at Sweaborg, Post Bombardment, Homeward Bound, Appendix - Some of our Baltic Gun Room Songs, Index. There are a few pencil annotations that are quite interesting - names of ships, liners, commanders and other crew. Plenty of information from the time of the Crimean War.
