Inscribed by honoree, Richard Martin. In 1990, the Fashion Institute of Technology held a highly curated exhibition of 100 years of swimwear. Bathing suits, notoriously difficult to design, must contend with and yet agree with social norms. It is a treacherous thing indeed to expose and yet not expose the human body. Swimwear, the eroticism it arouses and the social complications it creates, has been highly chronicled with the help of photography. Fashion scholars Richard Martin and Harold Koda, at the time, both curators with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, collaborated on "SPLASH!" to accompany the 1990 exhibition. Numerous archival photographs in both black and white and vivid color show the changes in society, fashion and fabric technology.
