Another instalment in the world-renowned Sharpe series, chronicling the rise of Richard Sharpe, who starts out as a Private in His Majesty's Army, and ends up as a Colonel. Reunited with Sgt Patrick Harper, Capt. Sharpe is embroiled in the British retreat through Portugal in 1810 from the defence of the ridge at Bussaco to the Lines of Torres Vedras, where the French offensive is successfully halted.
