Illustrated throughout with photographs, drawings and reproductions of memorabilia. The origins of Skiffle lay in the music of the migrant workers of the 1920s and 30s who had left their homes in the southern states of America seeking work in the north and carried their musical heritage with them, whether it was the Mississippi blues, the work song, or the barrelhouse ballad, and a wealth of household 'instruments" including the washboard, gut bucket or the tea chest bass. Forewords by Mark Knopfler, George Harrison & Joe Brown. One of the original 'Skiffle Kings', McDevitt documents the rise and fall of the craze that began in the 1950s, tracing Skiffle from its origins in the music of migrant workers through ''Rock Island Line'' to the current influence of this forgotten sound.
