Forman Brown was one of the world's leaders in puppet theatre in his day, as well as an important early gay novelist. He was a member of the Yale Puppeteers and the driving force behind the famous Turnabout Puppet Theater in Los Angeles. This is his first book, a poetry collection. ##### Frontispiece and 3 full-page woodcuts by Packard, all with spider-web patterned glassine guards. This issue with the illustrated jacket precedes the more common edition issued in wrappers, also with a jacket. This is the first book by the noted gay author who also wrote the 1933 novel Better Angel, about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. The novel is regarded as the first American novel to present the 'gay' experience in a healthy light.[Under the pseudonym Richard Meeker.] When it was reprinted in 1995, under the assumption that the author was no more alive, Brown stepped forward and acknowledged the novel was heavily autobiographic. ##### Inscribed on front flyleaf to Charleson Gray, another writer, most known for writing the Photoplay novelization of The Vagabond Lover, Rudy Vallee s first film about a small-town boy who finds fame and romance when he joins a dance band.
