With an autographed signed letter by John Greenleaf Whittier pasted into the volume at the front, bound by George Zabriskie, with Zabriskie s bookplate to the front end paper inscribed to his brother Edward. Full leather binding, decorative gilt compartments, gilt sunburst design at the bottom of both boards, full leather paste downs with blue leather floral onlays, silk end papers, further marbled end papers, inscribed Zabrinskie bookplate, and written letter signed by John Greenleaf Whittier. 70 pages printed on one side only, illustrated with frontispiece portrait and 8 "designs" by E. H. Garrett, (first state of first trade edition with "Lapse tenderly away," illustration incorrectly listed in the List of Illustrations at page 64 rather than 68). One of Whittier's last publications, a collection of 18 poems, including Lydia Sigourney and O.W. Holmes. John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Frequently listed as one of the fireside poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings, as well as his 1866 book Snow-Bound. George A. Zabriskie (1868-1954) was an American author, president of several prominent baking corporations, and the 22nd president of the New York Historical Society who served from 1939-1947. This is the first trade edition (after an earlier edition with the same title originally published in a privately printed edition of only 277 copies, for the author's friends, but containing only 11 poems and no illustrations.) 70pp. Approximately 7 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, 5 raised bands, decorative gilt illustrations in the compartments, rubbed to the top of the spine and small part of leather marked to the third compartment (from the top). Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition gently bumped. Boards good condition full dark blue leather boards, gilt borders with a gilt sunburst decoration along the bottom edge, red leather onlay representing the sun. Page edges good condition top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition bright orange leather and blue leather paste downs with gilt floral and blue leather onlay design, gilt dentelles, GAZ is printed in gilt along the bottom edge of the front paste down. End papers good condition dark blue silk, the first two subsequent end paper are marbled. Title good condition red and black text with small b/w vignette to the centre. Pages good condition there is a book plate of the first free end paper, on the facing page there is a hand written letter signed John Whittier, tissue guarded frontispiece with 8 further illustrations, text printed on one side only.
