8.5 x 6, cloth, 912 pp, covers very worn, pp soiled and toned and stained, an all-around poor copy but FIRST ED, INSCRIBED ("For Whit & Pierce with all good wishes. . ."), DATED (May 7, 1937), AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR (as "Tom Wolfe") on the front free endpaper, "F" in "For" badly ink smudged, page heavily toned. Whit and Pierce were friends Margaret Whitelaw and Pierce Yarrell Matthews of Burnsville, NC. It was on this visit to Burnsville that Wolfe allegedly witnessed a shooting (on May 8). He was quoted as saying "I knew they didn't like me in Asheville, but I didn't know they'd come all the way to Burnsville to get me." With photocopy of notes pertaining to provenance, and AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED ON POSTCARD FROM WOLFE'S SISTER MABEL TO MARGARET WHITELAW ANNOUNCING THE DEATH OF HER BROTHER FRANK.
