Scarce limited signed first printing of this retelling of the classic chilvaric romance, with bold modernist woodcut illustrations by the "Dean of American craftsmen" (POPULAR WOODWORKING). Inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement, Esherick laid the groundwork for the American Craftsman period in his furniture designs and woodcut illustrations. He produced these for TRISTRAM AND ISEULT in a period in which he had reached the zenith of his career as a sculptor, and he began to move more fully into making furniture; they are examples of his fully developed artistry. This attractive production is quite scarce on the market. 11.5'' x 9''. Original black cloth boards with gilt spine lettering. Deckle edges. Illustrated in black and white. 104 pages. Signed by Hare and Esherick to limitation page, numbered 38 of 450. Binding with light edgewear, small chip to spine head, not affecting the text. Leaves with a couple faint spots of soil, a touch of offsetting to title page. Firm. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 49346
