"With the brilliance of the very great journalist he is and the sincerity of a witness and prophet, Philip Gibbs paints in this book the world that was, the agony it went through, and the things we must face if we are to save the future. He starts with the sense of peace that was over all the world early in 1914, shows the sudden approach of the Great War and its dreadful catastrophe, and paints such a picture of after-developments as no one else has been able to give us. Particularly valuable is his analysis of the factors that menace present and future. No detail escapes him from the Dawes Report to the Ku Klux Klan; both the continents of Europe and America are held in his world view. And yet it reads with the fascination of a story and the thrill of a great drama. Here is no confusing clutter of day-by-day journalism but a perspective on all the difficult problems the world faces today. And yet there is something beyond this lucidity and grasp in "Ten Years After;" there is the profound emotion of "The Middle of the Road" and "Now It Can Be Told." The book would not be the work of Philip Gibbs if it were not inspired by a passion for truth and by the sense of the human spirit as something beyond all comparison noble and beautiful." - from the jacket front.
