Beschreibung
Inscribed and Signed by the author to his wife on the dedication page. Also with a letter addressed to the author. First Edition. Very Good to Near Fine condition. Author's first book. Jordan's first book, Thomas De Quincey: Literary Critic (1952; republished 1973) quickly established him as a leading authority on his subject. Of this book, Rene Wellek, one of the most distinguished of all literary historians, remarked: "[it] is by far the best work on the subject: erudite, sensitive, and wide-ranging, a major contribution to the history of English criticism." Consequently, Jordan was asked to edit two volumes of De Quincey for Everyman's Library, and he also edited De Quincey as Critic (1973) for the important Routledge Critics Series. This book is invaluable for students of Romanticism because there is no modern edition of De Quincey's collected works; the edition of David Masson (1889-90) does not meet the standards of modern textual scholarship, and therefore Jordan had to re-edit the contents of De Quincey as Critic from the original periodical sources. Jordan also contributed the chapter on De Quincey in the Modern Language Association's The English Romantic Poets: A Review of Research, first published in 1957, then revised and expanded in 1966.
