Octavo, pp 286, with many illustrations in text, and portrait frontis. of the author. Published posthumously, the illustrations are engraved from pen and ink drawings by Antonio Utrillo. Altamirano's (1834 - 93) most famous novel, reprinted many times in Spanish, but only once in English by the Folio Society -- apparently the only English translation. It is set in the period of Pres. Juarez' struggle over the Reform Laws, just before the French invasion and short-lived reign of the Emperor Maximilian. The land is in a state of chaos, and the region where the novel takes place is terrorized by the bandit El Zarco and his gang. In the course of the love story, a fine portrait of Mexico at this period is drawn. Altamirano was a close associate of Juarez during these trying times, but the novel was written between 1885 - 1889, and not published til 1901, posthumously. The book has a very colorful publisher's signed (J. Rosa) binding showing a "paisaje tipico" -- typical landscape of Mexico, maguey and palm tree and desert land in vivid colors on the front, in a kind of Aztec design border -- see photos attached. The book is fragile, as a result of the text block being a little too heavy for the binding. However, this is a very good copy, hinges intact, and cover art still spectacular, in quite handsome custom slipcase. Surprisingly scarce: no copies shown appearing at auction, and only 9 OCLC holdings. Very good copy. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7160
