Edition Originale de cette étude sur "les penchants et les sentiments que nous partageons avec les espèces inférieures", avec l'exposé des doctrines de l'auteur sur le fonctionnement du cerveau, ainsi que des observations sur la constitution neurologique des criminels et sur la localisation cérébrale des sentiments impulsifs. Un long chapitre est notamment consacré à la sexualité. Précieux exemplaire, tiré sur grand papier et offert par l'auteur à Annabella Milbanke, Lady Byron (1792-1860), ancienne épouse du poète anglais Lord Byron et mère de la grande mathématicienne Ada Byron Lovelace (1815-1852), avec un envoi autographe signé: "A Lady Byron, Hommage respectueux. F.Voisin". L'histoire du mariage raté de Lady Byron avec le poète, accusé d'homosexualité et de relations incestueuses avec sa s ur, confère à son exemplaire d'un livre sur la déviance comportementale un intérêt exceptionnel. Planche gravée hors-texte représentant les "formes générales des têtes criminelles" et les "formes générales des têtes supérieures". Quelques inscriptions au crayon gris dans le corps du volume.
