Calcutta: The Living City incorporates eighty-six essays covering virtually every aspect of life in the city as it was and as it is. Edited by Sukanta Chaudhuri, Professor at Jadavpur University, the articles have been contributed by over seventy writers who are among Calcutta's most noted scholars, writers and intellectuals. Volume I of The Living City covers the past from the origins of the name Calcutta and its founder Job Chamock to the early twentieth century. The volume concentrates on the history of Calcutta in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries spilling over to the twentieth century. It focuses on the literature, art and architecture of Calcutta together with its dominant personalities. Volume II contains 51 contributions providing an account of Calcutta in the twentieth century and prediction regarding future development. Most contributions are on topics relating to the economic and cultural aspects of the city as well as contemporary issues and subjects. While unfolding the city's fascinating past the book is oriented towards the Living City of today and to some extent tomorrow. While celebrating Calcutta's immensely rich cultural heritage it presents the full reality of the city with all its challenges.
