In 2004 Ruth Downie won the Fay Weldon section of BBC3's "End of Story" competition. She has also won or been highly placed in several short story competitions including the Bridport Prize, and won the Historical Novel Society's challenge to start a historical romance. She was runner-up in the Mail on Sunday's "Start a Novel" competition, and one of her short stories was chosen as Writers News "Winner of winners" for 1997. Ruth is married with two sons. She lives in Milton Keynes.
